Fraternity and Sorority Debate: Reasons to Join and Not
Some claim that that most, if not all, of the disputes among students in campuses (e.g. gang wars) are fraternity or sorority related. This therefore leads us to the discussion on whether ‘belongingness’ or ‘violence’ is the term that best fits fraternities and sororities.
The following can be submitted as reasons for holding that fraternity and sorority are more of ‘belongingness.’
1. Sororities and fraternities provide protection, security, and refuge especially to students who are prone to bullying.
2. These societies promote and even initiate educational and socio-civic activities.
3. Sororities and fraternities strengthen brotherhood, camaraderie, and friendship.
4. Many successful persons, like various government officials, are members of fraternities. They support each other, thereby helping each other to become successful.
5. As these societies provide support systems, they build and boost a member’s confidence and self-esteem.
For the claim that the societies are more of violence-related, the following can be put forward:
1. Practically speaking, fraternities and sororities are involved in scuffles, brawls, commotions, and other various forms of disorders in campuses.
2. Fraternities and sororities usually introduce or expose youth to drug use and addiction. The members who have access to prohibited drugs typically assist those co-members who are curious and wish to experiment on taking the substances.
3. The idea of becoming a member of a fraternity or sorority promotes conflicts and unhealthy competitions. One specific society commonly sees another as a rival, not an ally.
4. Many fraternities and sororities have led their members to blind activism. Capitalizing on the youth’s idealism and zeal, some have used the societies to propagate radical ideologies.
