Should Abortion be Tolerated or Legalized in the Philippines? Questions and Answers

1. Do you think abortion should be tolerated or legalized in the Philippines? Why or why not?

I believe that abortion should not be tolerated nor legalized in the Philippines because the right to life ought to always outweigh other rights, such as the right of a person to equality or to control one’s own body.

2. What do you think are the causes of abortion?

Causes of abortion include unwanted or unplanned pregnancy, the parents’ being not financially or mentally prepared, and partner-related reasons (e.g. the partner is not the ‘right guy,’ not supportive, or does not want the baby).

3. What do you think are the effects of abortion?

Abortion can damage the long-term physical and emotional health of women who had an abortion.

4. Do you think abortion is medically safe?

Abortion, I believe, is not medically safe. Studies repot that its side effects include abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Moreover, it carries the risk of substantial complications like bleeding, infection, and damage to organs.

5. As a parent (father or mother), what is your opinion about abortion?

As a parent, I do not believe that my daughters should have an abortion. Abortion may bring about negative emotions which may become recurring.

Studies say that this psychological response is a form of post-traumatic stress disorder, the possible symptoms of which include guilt, flashbacks of abortion, eating disorders, depression, relationship problems, sexual dysfunction, alcohol and drug abuse, and suicidal thoughts.

6. If you are a church leader, how would you prove your stand with the use of your beliefs and faith in the church?

Induced abortion is a purposeful expulsion from the uterus of a fetus (britannica.com) which already has a life.

Concerning taking a human life, the Bible states that “If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image” (Gen. 9:6 New Living Translation 2004).

God forbids man to commit murder (Exod. 20:13). This was reiterated and upheld by our Lord Jesus Christ (Matt. 19:17-18).

When there is life already in the mother’s womb, it should not be intentionally removed or terminated, lest one goes against God’s prohibition.

7. How will you influence the society to stand with your opinion regarding abortion?

By helping them to understand that abortion involves the taking of human life. It is against God’s teachings as human life is created by God.

About life being formed in mother’s womb, the Bible states, thus: “And now the LORD speaks – the one who formed me in my mother’s womb to be his servant …. The LORD has honored me, and my God has given me strength.” (Isa. 49:5 NLT2004)
