How to cut the non-breakable substitute for glass (acrylic plastic)

Available under various trade names, rigid acrylic plastic is used as a craft or building material. Acrylic plastic, in sheet form, can be cut with ordinary woodworking tools. You may use the following tips:

Leave the protective paper covering in place while cutting so as to avoid scratching the plastic.

In cutting acrylic that is up to 1/8-inch thick, you may make use of “the score-and-break method”.

Pencil on the paper a cutting line and then align a straight edge along it.

Draw a scoring tool along the straight edge 8 to 10 times, in a way that it cuts deeper into the acrylic each time.

To snap the acrylic in two, put the acrylic along a table edge, with the scored line at the edge, then carefully apply a sharp downward pressure.

Make use of a power saw to get a smooth edge on acrylic plastic that is thicker than 1/8 inch. To do it, support the sheet by clamping most of it on a table surface, leaving only ample overhang for saw-blade clearance.
