Basic Similarities of Religions
Commonly, most if not all religions aspire to serve as a foundation of societal harmony. They can be a source of social unity and cohesion. They influence people to control their behaviors so as to maintain peace and order in the community by providing socially accepted values and ethical norms.
Some of the social values taught by religions which maintain social cohesion are: “Children should obey their parents,” “Women should be faithful to men (and vice versa),” “People should not tell lie,” and “People must be honest and not deceitful.”
The following are other similarities among religions:
– Religions encourage ritual activities for individuals and communities of faith. Most religions commemorate sacred stories through ceremonies or rituals.
– Various religions promote a moral code or ethical principles to guide individuals and communities (as expressed in Ten Commandments, ‘shari’ah’ (‘Islamic law’), and the path of Buddha)
– Religions encourage communication or fellowship with the divine. Examples are personal and/or congregational prayers and meditative techniques.
– Through sacred stories, the religions provide a coherent worldview. Examples are the creation story and the stories about the lives and teachings of the great religious leaders.
